Reliance on Morelos not anything new and is a lazy excuse

We’re too reliant on Alfredo Morelos.

Are we though? We have won plenty of games when he has been poor and Kemar Roofe was top goal scorer last season, we can’t be that reliant on him.

Obviously I’m being facetious in that of course we missed Morelos against Celtic, he’s one of, if not our best player when he is fit and on his game, nonetheless, it’s a strange criticism to come out with against a team or a manager.

We missed Ally McCoist when he was injured, and Richard Gough, and Barry Ferguson or Paul Gascoigne and Brian Laudrup, in short, every team misses good players, it isn’t a condition exclusive to Rangers.

Questioning “why haven’t we got a player who can come in for him after all these years” is also one most fans could probably answer themselves, how many teams have a player who sits on the bench purely to cover the best player but is just as good, even Real Madrid and Man City don’t have that sort of luxury?

Kemar Roofe is a good player, his record since joining us backs that up and without him we wouldn’t have won the league last season but we need to make adaptations when he plays instead of Morelos, firing the ball up to him at head height isn’t any use, he just doesn’t have the same physicality.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst

Back him.

Back him.

Sack him.

Sack him.

This is the sort of issue facing Giovanni van Bronckhorst in that he hasn’t had the time to implement plan A properly, never mind plan B.

Throwing money at new signings isn’t always guaranteed to solve the problem either, spending £5million on a striker would be great but the flip side is would we be happy with someone like Albian Ajeti in the squad? Spending money doesn’t always guarantee success.

It’s going to be a busy summer and one that will shape the squad for the next few years, getting more depth up front is key to minimising disruption as is time on the training ground fine tuning how to get the best out of the players we have, blank cheques, unfortunately, are a thing of the past.
