Steven Davis has intimated that a stay at Rangers beyond this season could be on the cards, with the potential of signing a contract extention.

In a fascinating Europa League Final preview exclusive with Steven Beacom of the Belfast Telegraph, the Northern Ireland legend opened up on what might happen next in terms of his club career, the meaning of another European final as well as touching on the recent sad losses of Walter Smith and Jimmy Bell, two Ibrox icons who gave their all for the club.

Davis stated that some initial discussions have already taken regarding options for next season, making it clear just how much Rangers means to him:

“We have had a couple of chats. With such big games coming up, we have said let’s focus on them and then we’ll sit down and have a discussion.”

“It’s a club very close to my heart and I enjoy being here. It is a great place to be.”

Dilemma

Can Steven Davis play on for another year? Absolutely. Will he play 25-30 games at Ibrox next season? That seems very unlikely.

Also, with Scott Arfield recently signing fresh 12 month terms, can Gio van Bronckhorst afford the luxury of retaining two veterans against the pathway and amount of game time for the likes of Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann coming through the ranks? That is a very pertinent issue that will take some hard thinking from Gio and Ross Wilson.

Regardless, Davis is still the man for the here and now, who will be ready if called upon in Seville. A European winners medal would be a fitting accolade for a man and a footballer, a NI icon who has already done so much at Ibrox as well as in the international arena.

He still has a role left to play, whether at Ibrox or not.
