Steven Gerrard’s had a tough few months. His Rangers team have gone from being genuine title contenders to being a side that needs a miracle to even get close to Celtic.

Naturally, poor form always generates doubters, but most Rangers fans would agree that Steven Gerrard is still the best man for the job. Our team has grown a lot this season, and long may it continue.

He’s brought the fire back to Ibrox, and as his latest statement ahead of our tie with Celtic this weekend suggests, he’s still saying exactly what fans want to hear.

As per the official Rangers Twitter page, he said: “You have to thrive in this atmosphere. If any of my squad don’t fancy it, they are at the wrong club.”

Essentially, what Gerrard is saying that the pressure and demands that are placed on the players in big games simply is part and parcel of being a Rangers player. If anyone isn’t able to thrive under those circumstances, they’re at the wrong club.

It’s, of course, the same at any big club. But our problem over the last few years is that we haven’t come across as a big club. We’ve stumbled and rocked back and forth with no real growth.

However, our mentality is beginning to change, and Gerrard is leading the way. He’s not accepting second best, and only the best is good enough.

As they say, if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen, and that’s the mantra that Gerrard is helping to lead Rangers into a new era with. And that’s exactly the right approach.
