Former Rangers manager Walter Smith recently revealed that Rangers once tried to sign Alan Shearer when he was still with Southampton.

Smith said that Graeme Souness had been looking at him when he was still in charge at Rangers, and Walter Smith continued to keep an eye on him as well after Souness left. In that season Rangers were interested, he played 60 games in all competitions for Southampton, scoring 21 goals.

It wasn’t to be though, and he went on to sign for Blackburn where he played a total of 171 games and scored 130 goals. Oh what could have been! He then of course moved to Newcastle where he played a total of 404 games and scored 206 goals. He didn’t do too badly for England either with 30 goals from 63 caps.
