The post-Brexit world of football transfers will affect Rangers perhaps more than most, English clubs looking to cherry pick our best talent and being able to offer the same money as our regular first-team starters.

For every success story like Nathan Patterson, Leon King and Alex Lowry where we have been able to fight off interest to get them signed up to long-term deals there will always be the odd Billy Gilmour, Rory Wilson and Nathan Young-Coombes.

For all that Wilson remains a Rangers player just now it seems like a foregone conclusion that he will be away in the summer, hopefully signing a new contract before he goes so that we at least make a bit of money out of the deal, Aston Villa and Liverpool the current favourites, however, in Young-Coombes case, a desire to return south and back home has seen him accelerate his progress rather than take a step back.

The 19-year old always seemed to back himself, possessing a self confidence bordering on arrogance that is needed to be a forward at the highest level and, in particular, at Rangers, so when he moved to Brentford in the summer it always felt like a future star was getting away.

Rangers wanted him to stay but after spending much of a pandemic on his own it’s understandable why he would be home sick, now though, that will seem like a distant memory after making his first senior appearance in the Premier League.

After scoring 30-odd goals for their B team he has been promoted to the first-team squad a few times and it’s great to see him get his debut, it’s just a shame that it wasn’t in the famous Light Blue of Rangers in front of a packed Ibrox.
