With Motherwell’s lamentable Europa League exit to Sligo Rovers on Thursday, the mind wandered back to points squandered last season by Rangers in the Premiership.

It is even more frustrating that the Gers drew twice with a very limited Motherwell team at Ibrox in the previous campaign, on either side of the calendar year.

Yes all of that is gone and a new season is upon us on Saturday but it provides a decent point of reference in terms of righting a wrong and the need for a ruthless streak if the league title is to be brought back to Ibrox.

We know all abut the collapse that came from January onward with daft draws against the likes of Ross County, Dundee United and Motherwell realistically ending the retention bid last time around.

A big part of that will come with Gio van Bronckhorst having proper time on the training pitch over the close season to implement ideas and really put his stamp on the team, as well as the new additions brought in to the group.

Ibrox has to be a fortress again, there can be no other way and no repeat of last year’s weak capitulation at the top of the table.

Meanwhile for Motherwell, what a shambles as they failed to score against Sligo Rovers over two legs. A 2-0 win for the Bit O’ Red was secured to add to the 0-1 victory in Lanarkshire last week.

Graham Alexander’s team look devoid of ideas and lacking quality all over the pitch, just a couple of days before the start of the new Premiership season.

Good luck to Fir Park…they are going to need it.
