In his preview of the coming seasonacross all the Premiership teams, Kris Boyd feels that Tom Lawrence can inflict damage for Rangers.

More is needed from the midfield and other attackers to supplement the likes of Alfredo Morelos, who will miss the start of the new campaign. In his absence, the responsibility will fall on Antonio Colak to lead the line.

In the warm-up games including West Ham and Spurs, it was largely a front four of Ryan Kent, Lawrence, Matondo plus Colak. That likely will have been Gio van Bronckhorst’s intended set-up to face Livingston but a minor injury to the Welsh international signed from Schalke could scupper that.

Meanwhile, Lawrence is looking sharp already and Boyd feels that he can make a difference. The former Rangers man told Sky Sports:

“Rangers have been criticised for not scoring enough goals from midfield, however, the signing of Tom Lawrence could solve that.”

“He will benefit from the movement of another summer signing, Antonio Colak, and as we saw at Derby County, when he times those runs into the box and finds that space, he can finish.”

Options

In terms of ‘goals from midfield’, that is essentially those coming from deep, behind the strikers and it is in that space where the former Derby man can flourish.

He appears to have a hunger to seize the opportunities that will comes his way at Ibrox and there will be plenty of time on the pitch for him in that ’10’ role as well as playing from wide – he adds to the balance that the manager spoke of.

Don’t be surprised if Tom Lawrence sends a signal of intent at the first time of asking at Livingston on Saturday.
