With Steven Gerrard high up the bookies favourites for the Newcastle hotseat, now speculation has emerged that the Toon are eyeing Alfredo Morelos.

This season for Rangers is a pivotal one and the aim is simple – to retain the title.

Regardless if that happens or not, first team players will be leaving the club this Summer, hopefully not out of necessity and as a result of positive player trading on decent contract terms and increased reputations.

In the case of Alfredo Morelos, this is his fifth season at Ibrox – a significant tenure for a foreign player to spend at any club.

The 25-year old landed at Ibrox in 2017 and has been a manstay of the Gerrard reign, all the way through to last season’s title winning breakthrough.

With previous links to the Premier League, Ligue Un and Portugal’s Primeira Liga not materialising so far, the Summer ahead will be intriguing, with the Colombian’s contract having one full year remaining, up to the end of the 22-23 season.

A report from 90min.com has claimed that El Bufalo is on the Newcastle shortlist and is seen as a reasonable target for the Premier League club as they enter a new era:

“Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos is another player they are looking closely at. The Colombian is someone the club has done a lot of work on already, and a move for him is a distinct possibility.”

Whilst Newcastle will act in January, Rangers won’t sanction sales this Winter unless serious money is offerred for their asserts. Come Summer time, the picture changes and the rest of this season will tell the story ahead of what will be a significant period for the club, either will Champions League qualification secured and a freshening up of the squad or the unthinkable, an effective fire-sale with no alternative.

That is the reality.
