Though Rangers fans won’t want to admit it, it’s important that the club begin preparations for next season. This year, despite all the hype, hasn’t gone to plan, and it’s about ensuring that we improve ahead of next season.

That’s not going to be easy, though, given the fresh uncertainty surrounding the future of Alfredo Morelos. Indeed, in an interview with Futbol Red, Morelos has raised concern over his future.

He said: “There are many teams that have asked for me, but I am focused on Rangers and with this opportunity that I have in the National Team that I must take advantage of. In the summer, things will be defined.”

He continued: “However, at the moment, nothing is certain.”

There’s a lot to unpack from Morelos’ comments, but none of the takeaways are particularly good for Rangers. Firstly, it seems as though interest in the Columbian is genuine. That’s no real surprise, given his form, but the fact is that he’s been made aware of other clubs having an interest in his services; and so that is a worry.

He’s focused on Rangers, but beyond the end of the season? His lack of long-term commitment either way does indicate that he’s keeping his options open, and so that will only make Steven Gerrard’s preparations for next season more difficult.

Of course, Morelos is a volatile personality, and so whilst Rangers could refuse to sell him, it’s hard to see him giving in without a fight in that instance.

So, where does this leave us? Well, with Morelos refusing to confirm that he’ll be a Rangers player next season, it means that the Gers must ensure that they have contingency plans in place, and whilst working to keep Morelos is a priority; that need to expect that their plans could fall apart if he decides to leave.

This is the last thing we needed to hear.
