The news that Scott Arfield has had his Rangers contract extended was widely appreciated as sensible by fans, he’s a great example to the younger players and knows what it takes to play for the club plus, if there is a turnaround of players, he’s the perfect individual to help new signings settle.

A common caveat is that he shouldn’t block Alex Lowry’s progress, the 18-year old once again showing just how talented he is in his cameo against Dundee United, another day and he walks away with a few assists.

Steven Davis is a bit more complicated in that he has a good few years on Arfield and that we really shouldn’t be relying on a player of his age to provide back-up, regardless of how experienced he is and how good a player he can be, he takes up a decent chunk of the wage bill without the minutes to justify it. The same goes for Allan McGregor.

A report has claimed that Rangers have offered the 40-year old a new contract, not only would this be a surprise given his age but his form just doesn’t warrant it, there are clear signs of decay in his game for all that he has still managed to produce the odd moment of genius.

In Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie we have two pairs of very safe hands and two keepers who better suit our style of play. We need our number one to be comfortable in possession and, even if the opposition only has one corner, come for the ball and relieve the pressure.

McGregor has been a wonderful servant, as has Davis, but we won’t progress if we keep giving contracts to players whose pay packets aren’t reflective of their time on the pitch.
