Last night against Queen of the South, Charlie McCann further evidenced his ability with another significant contribution for Rangers.

Unlike the other young lads – Robbie Ure, Adam Devine and Leon King – McCann was not awarded the pleasure of a starting slot but that did not faze the Coventry-born midfielder, he did his talking on the pitch with a sublime back heel assist for Scott Arfield’s important second goal of the night and Rangers third of the game, to put the contest beyond the Doonhamers.

His rise is all the more impressive given that his taste of first team football has largely been from the bench. Think of pre-season against Blackpool, Scottish Cup v Annan, then there was the last day of the season at Tynecastle when he and several other youngsters were pitched in.

So what is next for the Northern Ireland U21 international?

He is too good for the Lowland League, his regular stage as part of Rangers B team. Scotland’s fifth tier isn’t going to improve the former Man Utd youth any more than the level he is at now. So can Gio get him enough minutes to progress or is now the time to send him out on loan? He could easily contribute in the Premiership.

There is maybe an argument that he should be retained just in case he is really required but that suggests a last resort type scenario.

Senior first team football will assist Charlie McCann to push on further into GvB’s plans. Make the call Rangers, the lad needs to play.
