It is official, John Lundstram is a Ranger.

This afternoon, the club confirmed the signing of the 27-year old former Sheffield United midfield mainstay.

In the 2019/20 season, with the Blades return to the Premier League, they made a real impression under Chris Wilder and Lundstram was at the forefront – making 34 appearances, with five goals in the process.

Unfortunately, they struggled more than most last season including Lundstram who could not replicate his previous form and an early return to the Championship beckoned for the Bramall Lane club.

Now that he has confirmed his move to Ibrox, signing a three year deal, the combative player can focus on his football knowing that his mid-term future is secured.

The former Everton trainee told Rangers official website how the lure of working with fellow Scouser and inspirational figure Steven Gerrard was a massive lure in coming to Glasgow, as well as paying tribute to the Gers fans for the impact they made over the last few months and the title celebrations.

He stated, “I know Glasgow is like Liverpool – a proper football city with proper football fans, and I know the people are very similar and I am buzzing to be a part of the atmosphere I am moving into.”

“The chance to work with Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister, as well as Michael Beale, was a huge draw.”

Something Special

Lundstram continued, “The manager is from the same area as me, and I want to learn from those coaches and become a better version of myself and continue to develop under them.”

“As an outsider looking in, the scenes last season were unbelievable when the club won the league, and when I saw that, I knew I wanted to be a part of it and be a part of a club which wins more trophies for Rangers.”

“There is something special still being built here and there is more to come. The pull of being in the Champions League was also massive for me and I want to help the team reach the group stage and make the most of that opportunity.”

Make no mistake about it, this is great business for Rangers – a 27-year old with significant Premier League and Championship experience on a free transfer, following on from the aquisition of Fashion Sakala, another Bosman boost.

With these two captures, Rangers have saved significant money on what would otherwise have been substantial transfer fees so kudos to Ross Wilson and his team for getting this one over the line.

Lundstram’s style of play should see him fit seemlessly into Scottish football and then there is the massive enticement of Champions League football, working under Steven Gerrard, with the backing of a jubilant, passionate Rangers support.

Welcome to the champions, John Lundstram.
