There has been recent speculation linking Jermain Defoe with a move to Ipswich Town but that has been played down by former Sunderland and England striker, Kevin Phillips.

In conversation with Football Insider, Phillips took stock of the current situation – the player’s age, his status at Rangers and the reality of League 1 life for Ipswich.

At present, Defoe is out of contract at Rangers looking into next season, but news is expected shortly.

On the reach of Ipswich, Philips stated:

“I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble but why would you go? I don’t think Jermain would want to drop down to League One, I just don’t see it happening. It’s probably just flattering that he’s been linked to them.”

“I would imagine that he could get a good Championship club if I’m being honest.”

“If I was in charge of a Championship club now I would be making enquiries to try and get him for a season, just to try and get you out of that league, simple as that.”

“No disrespect to Ipswich, I don’t see that one happening. He will probably stay at Rangers.”

Decision

There is a willingness on the player’s part to stay as well as a mutual respect from Steven Gerrard and the coaching staff – the manager has stated that it will come down to what Defoe is looking for in terms of involvement and whether they can agree.

A productive, positive conversation will determine if Defoe’s stay in Glasgow will be prolonged or if he will finish his career elsewhere.

Given the style and substance that the veteran England international displayed in the close of the season against Celtic and Aberdeen in particular, he still clearly has what it takes to play on in the SPFL Premiership.

He notched up seven league goals across the campaign as Rangers romped to the title.
