Ross Wilson has faced his first test of the summer, refusing to buckle to Premier League interest in Kai Kennedy and sending the Scotland youth cap out on loan.

The 19-year old was flattered by the bid from West Ham United but has now turned his attention on proving that he is good enough for Rangers first-team by impressing at Dunfermline this season something that former Gers academy graduate, Alan Hutton, has backed him to do in an interview with Football Insider:

“It is flattering to be so young and be linked with such big teams in the Premier League. It’s obviously great for confidence and a great boost but it’s about using that in the right way.

“It’s about using that as a boost for you to say: ‘Well, I still have to prove myself. I still need to break into the Rangers first team. That’s my goal and ambitions moving forward.’

“You have to keep your feet on the ground, you can’t let it go to your head because it can quickly turn. You think that you’ve already made it and before you know it, you’re nowhere.

“It seems like he’s a level-headed young man who is ambitious, who wants to push forward.

“I’m pretty sure he’ll use this in the right way. Keep his feet on the ground and work hard.

I think his ultimate goal is to be in the Rangers first team. That’s what he wants to do first and foremost. Hopefully, we can see that breakthrough through this season.”

Hutton is right, Kennedy is talented enough to make the breakthrough but he needs to get his head down and prove that he is good enough, it just isn’t going to be handed to him.

It’s never been tougher for a youngster to force their way into the first-team but as shown by Nathan Patterson and Stephen Kelly, if you are good enough and apply yourself in the right way, you will be given your chance.
