Signing players from other SPFL teams is always a bit of a gamble especially those that haven’t played many minutes.

It didn’t cost Rangers much when Jake Hastie arrived from Motherwell in the summer of 2019 after impressing in the second half of the previous season scoring six goals and providing 1 assist in just 12 games, however, he has yet to show any repeat of this form either at Ibrox or at any of his loan clubs.

At 23-years old he should be approaching a level of consistency but this season, back at Fir Park, he has managed just 15 appearances and has yet to register a single goal or assist, he just hasn’t made the most of the opportunities to prove that he is worthy of a place in Steven Gerrard’s first team squad.

He’s going to be miles away when he reports for pre-season given the players that now occupy the spaces in the forward department so, does he persist in his current position given how unproductive he has been or consider a change that could benefit Rangers.

Our full-backs play higher up than most traditional wingers and Hastie’s main attribute is his pace when running into space, something that he would be able to utilise more if he was running from deep, the only question would be whether or not he could learn the art of depending to an adequate level – even if it is just to be back up to Borna Barisic whilst he is still at the club.

Let’s face it though, it’s a move that hasn’t really worked out for either party but that doesn’t mean that it should put us off making similar moves in the future, the risk to reward ratio remains in our favour, especially with someone like Ross Wilson on board.
