Rangers have reportedly been tracking Jacob Murphy for most of this season, however, they will face stiff competition for the 26-year old if they are to sign him this summer.

Watford and Southampton are also said to be interested in the former £12million man who’s contract status means that if he isn’t going to stay at Newcastle, then he will likely be sold.

Speaking to Football Insider, BBC pundit Danny Mills believes that the winger could snub a move to Rangers in favour of a larger pay packet:

“Maybe. The Scottish league is a tricky one, it really is. I suppose it depends on what you want as a player. Is that enough?

“Or if you’ve got the opportunity to play in the Premier League that’s more competitive, there’s more exposure week in, week out, there’s more money.

“As a player, you’re always looking to improve and what’s next and where can I go to?

“It’s about man-management of yourself. Learn your trade, get better so when you go to another club you’re ready and go straight into the first-team rather than sit on the bench.

“Players rarely stay at one club for their whole career.”

Mills omits one obvious detail – the Champions League. None of the teams being mentioned are on Rangers level in terms of European status or compete in continental football with such regularity. We are also able to offer the chance to win trophies – in most seasons – and for some players who have already got a decent bank balance, success, glory and happy memories count for a lot more.
