It’s been announced today that 21 year old defender Chris Hegarty has mutually terminated his contract with the club and will depart as a free agent.

Having spent most of the season battling with injury, he turned out only twice for us last term and it’s been agreed by all parties that it’s probably best for him to move on to a fresh club, so he can get back to playing very regular football again now and get himself back on track.

Having joined us back in 2010, he made his club debut in May 2012 in a friendly against Linfield, before going on to make 28 starts and one substitute appearance in our Third Division title run.

Speaking to the Official Site as news broke about his departure, he said.

‘I fulfilled an ambition by playing for a team I grew up supporting and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity. I had a bad time with injury last season and at this important stage of my career I need to play first team football week in week out and the manager was good enough to let me go and pursue that.’

Hegarty goes on to thank physio Steve Walker and Doc Jackson for all their hard work and support during his injuries last campaign, and of course he thanks the management staff and the fans for how he has been treated at the club.

Finally he wishes Rangers the very best in the Championship next season and says he’s looking forward to returning as a fan and helping to cheer the boys on.
