Former Rangers defender David Bates made his league debut for Hamburg this evening, but things didn’t go to plan for the young defender.
The 21-year-old, who made 20 appearances for the Ibrox side last term, started the Germans’ opening league match but was substituted off just 57 minutes into the game, minutes after away side Holstein Kiel netted the opening goal.
It was a fairly calamitous hour of football from the defender, with commentators on BT Sport noting he had been one of the worst performers on the pitch.
He will be hoping to bounce back and become a key performer for the German second-tier side.
Rangers supporters watching on believe it’s evidence that the player was not all he was hyped to be, feeling far more comfortable with their defensive line now that Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson are at the club.
Were the club right not to offer him a tempting enough deal to stay in Glasgow?
Fans have taken to Twitter tonight to share their thoughts on his performance…

Seeing David Bates playing for Hamburg tonight just makes me all the more thankful for Katic and Goldson, there was Rangers fans who thought Bates was good, that shows how bad our defence has been for years
