Former Rangers defender David Bates made his league debut for Hamburg this evening, but things didn’t go to plan for the young defender.

The 21-year-old, who made 20 appearances for the Ibrox side last term, started the Germans’ opening league match but was substituted off just 57 minutes into the game, minutes after away side Holstein Kiel netted the opening goal.

It was a fairly calamitous hour of football from the defender, with commentators on BT Sport noting he had been one of the worst performers on the pitch.

He will be hoping to bounce back and become a key performer for the German second-tier side.

Rangers supporters watching on believe it’s evidence that the player was not all he was hyped to be, feeling far more comfortable with their defensive line now that Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson are at the club.

Were the club right not to offer him a tempting enough deal to stay in Glasgow?

Fans have taken to Twitter tonight to share their thoughts on his performance…

Do you think Rangers are better off now David Bates has left the club? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

  • His first league game and he was yanked after fifty odd minutes. Does that actually mean he is crap or are there other obstacles in his way at the moment, like language for instance? I believe he will become a good player for Hamburg but that also depends on their management team, players and supporters, as well. However, I do remember one Fernando Ricksen lasting not twenty minutes at celtic park and I think he turned out to be a helluva lot better than a decent player! Good job Advocaat didn’t label him a dud and send him packing! I know Ricksen had pedigree and Bates has none but it doesn’t mean Bates won’t eventually reach that level as even very good players can have a mare as Fernando proved that day.

  • Rangers dodged a bullet when they let Bates go, we now have 2 outstanding centre backs in Goldson and Katic, he is not missed at all.
