Glen Kamara was the subject of almost weekly rumours during the summer transfer window and one name that refused to go away probably wish that they had followed up their move given their start to the Premier League season.

Arsenal have struggled since the season kicked off and having a player of Kamara’s calibre might have gone some way in sealing up their leaky defence, however, they went another direction and – despite spending a fortune – are now battling at the bottom of the table.

Kamara is, of course, a former Gunner himself and it seemed to be a transfer that was only going to be a matter of time with a report in Football Insider detailing exactly what was on the table for the Finland international:

“Ibrox sources has told Football Insider that Arsenal shortlisted Kamara, 25, as a potential target and were offering him a five-year deal.

“But a deal did not get off the ground and the Premier League outfit eventually signed Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht for around £16m.

“It is believed that Kamara was interested in hearing what Arsenal had to say amid doubts over his long-term Rangers future.”

What Arsenal paid for Lokonga probably would have been enough to be allowed to formally speak to the Gers midfielder and make him an offer, when you consider some of the fees being paid in England, anything around that mark has to be considered a bargain for a player of Kamara’s calibre and growing reputation.

Who scored the winner in Sunday's first Old Firm of 2021/22?

There is no doubt that he has the skillset to play at a higher level, his displays in the European Championships alone indicate that he is fearless when mixing it with some of the continent’s best.

A modern midfielder has to be capable of contributing at both ends of the park and Kamara has proven that he can do exactly that and for all that the bank balance could do with a bit of a boost, there’s more than a part of me is glad that Arsenal didn’t see sense and make Ross Wilson an offer he couldn’t refuse.
