If Rangers are to land Heerenveen’s Joey Veerman, the task has become more difficult following a report that Serie A high flyers Atalanta are ready to pounce for the talented Dutchman.

In recent weeks, the Gers have been heavily linked with Veerman, both in Scotland and in the Netherlands.

A previous Daily Record report quoted an £8.5 million fee for the player’s services, but it remains to be seen just how accurate that tag will be.

The same outlet has followed up with news that Champions League hopefuls Atalanta are ready to move.

The Bergamo based club had another fine season in Italy, finishing in third place, to secure a route into Europe’s top competition.

In the Record, they stated:

“However, Italian outlet Bergamoe Sport claim that the Serie A side are the first to make their move for the midfielder.”

“Atalanta are reportedly keen to recruit from the Dutch top flight this summer and Veerman is top of boss Gian Piero Gasperini’s wish list.”

“The report notes that he would be seen as a developing talent and first-team opportunities could be limited at the Champions League bound side.”

It seems obvious that Joey Veerman would be coming to Ibrox as a key figure, not to be a bit part player on the fringes.

Wanted

Any charm ofensive by manager Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson will sell the club, the attraction as well as the pathway to further personal development and success.

As reported previously by VitalRangers, there is plenty of interest in Veerman, wanted by several clubs – coming off the back of a very decent season in the Eredivisie with seven goals and ten assists.

His current club captain has spoken on his understanding that namesake Joey will move on from Heerenveen this Summer:

Henk Veerman was reported to have said:

“I’ve read things about Atalanta, Rangers, PSV, Ajax and AZ.”

“I expect him to go to one of those clubs. I also think that Joey will add value for any club in the Netherlands.”
