Gerrard’s missing “spark” could be provided by 34-cap England international available for free – opinion

Steven Gerrard spoke of his side missing a “spark” during their post winter break slump and he may be tempted to cast his eye to his former club with a Champions League winner available for free.

Adam Lallana is approaching the end of his Anfield contract and despite Jurgen Klopp hoping to keep him around for another year, the 34-times capped England international looks to be on his way out of Liverpool.

Rangers would face significant competition for his signature with Brendan Rodgers keen to be re-united with him at Leicester City and Arsenal also rumoured to be interested.

Lallana has mainly operated in Liverpool’s midfield three in a similar system to the one adopted by Gerrard at Rangers, he has 22 appearances in a red shirt this season but is often used to rest key players as Klopp manages his squad to cope with the demands of modern football.

Which English club did Rangers sign Ally McCoist from in 1983?

If the Light Blues were to get lucky, the 31-year old would be given attacking license similar to that of Scott Arfield – when he plays in a deeper role – although he is far from past his best and hasn’t had to endure 50+ games per season, there would still be some amongst the Rangers support that would be reticent about signing another player in their 30s.

Whether or not Lallana could rediscover the form that saw him earn 34-caps for England remains to be seen and he would certainly be one of the highest paid players at the club, but if Gerrard feels that he could provide the spark that he so desperately craves, the former Southampton captain could yet be taking the drive up the M6 when football kicks-off again.
