There has been a lot made this season over the fact that Rangers midfield was assembled for a grand total of around £400,000 and has been a key reason for our current domestic dominance.

Being responsible for the tempo of our build up play whilst also protecting our two, often isolated, centre halves is a huge responsibility and yet the six players trusted to do the job have been near faultless.

There is a question mark over one of them though and one that I feel is more than a little harsh. We have the option to extend Bongani Zungu’s stay at Ibrox beyond this season by making his deal permanent and yet there are some who appear to have written off the South African international despite Steven Gerrard himself pushing to get him in the door.

His primary role at the moment appears to be to come off the bench as Gerrard’s “closer” in that when games need to be seen out, he sits in front of the back four, breaks up play and holds onto possession – he has yet to start a league game and has played just 430 minutes.

Should we sign Zungu permanently?

Yes

No

No

We have yet to see his full range of passing due to the form of Steven Davis but Zungu offers a physicality that the Northern Irishman lacks, through no fault of his own, that comes in handy when teams start to go more direct in desperate attempts to get back into games.

Davis won’t be around forever though and the £2.7million loan-to-buy option we have on Zungu is one that should be taken up, he has settled in well, knows the game plan and hasn’t put a foot wrong in a Light Blue jersey – given a run of games, he will only get better.
