Former Rangers full-back, Alan Hutton, has no fears about Steven Gerrard’s title chances should the club decide to cash-in on Alfredo Morelos having secured a top quality replacement in the shape of Kemar Roofe.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton reflected on his own personal experience of playing against the recent acquisition from Anderlecht.

So what has Hutton said?

When asked how he sees the former Leeds United forward fitting into Gerrard’s system and style of play, he said:

“Well, there’s the question. I’ve played against him and I do think he can play on the wing if Gerrard plays a 4-3-3 or if he changes to a 4-2-3-1, I’d like to see him in behind the striker.

“If Morelos does play, I think he can play in behind him but you just wonder is this the replacement striker that we’ve been speaking about for weeks, to play the central figure up front?

“I think he’s an amazing replacement – if Morelos does go, I’m not sitting here worried any more. He can take the mantle if you like and really drive Rangers forward.”

So is Hutton correct?

Only time will tell, however, Roofe certainly has the pedigree, versatility and ability to have a positive impact on the Rangers attack, with or without Alfredo Morelos alongside him.

Gerrard has hinted that there could be a possible change in formation given the new players that have arrived and a lot will depend on whether or not Morelos leaves when considering where Roofe will play under the Gers gaffer.

Will Morelos still be at Rangers when the transfer window shuts?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Rangers front three has been very fluid this season with Morelos dropping deeper to create space for runners in behind and Roofe’s flexibility is sure to be an asset if he is deployed centrally or out wide having led the line at his previous clubs.

Cedric Itten has already made a positive impact on Gerrard, however, with the game at 3-0, he didn’t get much of a chance to show what he was capable of with Rangers coasting to the three points on his debut, his fellow new signing will be desperate to line up in the famous Light Blue shirt sooner rather than later and show that he can be the man to replace the enigmatic Colombian.
