Gerrard Keeping His Eye On The Prize Ahead Of Celtic Clash

|

With Rangers looking forward to this Sunday’s Scottish League Cup Final against Celtic, manager Steven Gerrard has welcomed tonight’s Premiership distraction at Pittodrie as we face Aberdeen.

Ahead of this season’s first opportunity for silverware, we make the trip tonight hoping to see a return of another three points and for Celtic to slip up in their clash with Hamilton Academical. With plenty of eyes on Sunday’s clash though, Gerrard has insisted that the squad won’t take their eye off the ball when it comes to our league action as he spoke to the BBC.

“I am pleased we have a game, sometimes a week leading into a final can be too long. This fixture certainly takes the focus away. It’s an important three points for us. We just fully focus on Aberdeen and the challenge they pose. Going up there in my time, we’ve had some really good battles and I expect the same. It is a great fixture and these are the games players have to enjoy. We’ll worry about Sunday come Thursday. There will be no talk of the final round here until after the Aberdeen match, we have to give Aberdeen the respect as they have gone on a spell of winning matches.”

With only goal difference separating the top two places in the division, we certainly can’t afford a lacklustre performance this evening and keeping the pressure on our near rivals is key. Victory tonight would also be the perfect preparation for the coming Cup clash, as we know that will be a tough one in itself, but Gerrard’s approach here is spot on for me.

“We’ve faced some real big challenges this year when you think of Feyenoord and Legia Warsaw away. I don’t think any of my players will be shying away or intimidated by the atmosphere up there.”

With a 5-0 victory under our belts earlier in the season, we know it’s in our hands.
