Speculation continues to surround the future of Alfredo Morelos with the Colombian international enjoying a far from spectacular start to his 2020/21 campaign, yes, he has contributed and provided fleeting moments but his all round performances have struggled to reach the dizzy heights of this time last year.

Steven Gerrard finally secured the much needed “firepower” that he was looking fro in the shape of Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe, however, with El Bufalo unlikely to be at the club when the transfer window shuts in October, Rangers fans may yet see another attacking face through the door.

There is also another elephant in the room that is the Gers forward line, Jermain Defoe, after playing four games in a row at the turn of the year, the England international has suffered a series of injuries that have prevented him from contributing.

A calf injury sustained in January followed by a hamstring tear suffered in pre-season show that the striker – who has never had the greatest injury record – is starting to feel the effects of a long career in elite football, with a game built around pace and movement, when either is restricted, his ability to make a similar contribution to the one that he did as back-up last season, 17 goals in 32 games, can seriously be called into question.

How many strikers should Gerrard bring in if Morelos leaves?

Defoe will need to be replaced in the not too distance future anyway and it may be that Gerrard already has plans to phase out the soon to be 38-year old – who now has 20-years of experience in senior football – if Morelos does move on, identifying players who can help Roofe and Itten contribute to the 57 goals that the pair conjured up last season becomes a matter of urgency – if Rangers are to usurp Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
