Gerrard faces Rangers selection dilemma as McAllister confirms key player injuries

Steven Gerrard faces a selection dilemma against Ross County for tonight’s Scottish Premiership fixture at Ibrox.

Gary McAllister confirmed in the pre-match press conference yesterday that both James Tavernier and Ryan Jack will be out for around two weeks – depending on recovery – which leaves a sizeable gap at both right-back and the heart of midfield.

Nathan Patterson made his debut against Stranraer in the Scottish Cup and earned rave reviews but found himself playing second fiddle to Jon Flanagan when league action recommenced against St Mirren, the scouser kept his place for the trip to Tynecastle but struggled in an error strewn 45 minute display which saw him subbed at half-time  – on a yellow card – for Matt Polster.

Polster was one of just a few players to emerge with any credit following the defeat to Hearts offering infinitely more attacking threat than Flanagan and with the necessary athleticism to provide the width that is so key to Rangers tactical performance.

With the American deemed surplus to requirements and given the standard of Flanagan’s performance, Patterson should be called upon to make his league debut, however, Polster’s cameo may persuade Gerrard into giving his Gers career a late reprieve.

In midfield, Jack’s absence will no doubt be covered by Scott Arfield – who came on at half-time against Hearts – playing in a deeper role in central midfield, with Glen Kamara and Steven Davis providing the protection for the back four Arfield will be given license to get forward and support the front three, something that was badly missing in the defeat at Tynecastle.

Amidst the injury doom and gloom there is one shining light, the return of Alfredo Morelos, the free scoring Colombian will bring a much needed lift to the Ibrox crowd as he plays his first game of 2020 and will look to continue the form that has seen him become the in demand player in Scottish football.
