With the outcome of yesterday’s Premier Sports Cup second round draw, Rangers have also arguably secured a favourable build up to the first Old Firm game of the season on 3rd September.

Prior to that game at Parkhead, Rangers will host Queen of the South at Ibrox on Tuesday 30th August.

The fixture, which will be televised live by Premier Sports, was confirmed earlier on Monday.

On the other hand, Celtic will play one day later in their League Cup fixture away to Premiership Ross County at their tricky Dingwall home ground.

For Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Rangers, the visit of the League One Doonhamers will present a chance for rotation and game time for others in the squad, ultimately to give the manager options ahead of such an important fixture.

Before that, Rangers host Ross County whilst Ange Postecoglou takes his side to Tannadice to face Dundee United.

Impact

As always, the League Cup presents the first opportunity of the season to secure silverware and in a Scottish context, it sets the chance of a treble as well as striking a blow in the battle for Old Firm supremacy.

This time around, the final of the tournament will take place on 26th February 2023.

Last season, GvB’s re-introduction to life at Rangers came at Hampden (from the stands) when he witnessed his new team’s capitulation to Hibs in the semi-final. This time around, he will be keen to push on and repeat the cup success of May when the Gers ended a 13 year wait to lift the Scottish Cup.
