Every cloud has a silver lining

Being part of the Rangers family this last few months has been much like the great Scottish weather this summer, unpredictable, mostly depressing and long periods of dark cloud hovering ever lower to bring the next downpour. However if there is any truth in the saying that every cloud does indeed have a silver lining (no, I`m not sure what that means either!) then perhaps our cloud with the silver lining appeared on the horizon yesterday, Friday the 13th of all days!

I was enjoying a wee holiday pint on Glasgow Fair Friday when ‘breaking news` on Sky Sports alerted us to the fact that Rangers would begin their new life in SFL Division 3. Now you might be excused for thinking that I instantly choked on my pint but you would be wrong. I looked outside and the Sun was shining, most unusual for Glasgow Fair! At last, a ray of sunshine but not just for punters lucky enough to be off work but for the whole of Scottish Football.

As much as the big bad bullies in the playground aka SFA & SPL had tried their hardest to intimidate the wee guys there are still people within our game who have honour, integrity and quite frankly managed to ‘grow a pair`. The best way to stand up to a bully is to confront him, in this case make him aware that for all his alleged power he is really nothing more than a scared kid acting out of bravado.

SFL chairpersons I salute you!

Now we can fight our way back to being the honourable club we once were, a club whose very foundations have been rocked to the core by the actions of Murray & Whyte. I have one last remaining doubt however and that is whether the vast infrastructure of Rangers can be sustained in the financial wilderness that is the 3rd division? No sooner than the news had arrived when one of my drinking buddies declared he was now about to renew his season ticket albeit at a significantly reduced price one would assume.

We have heard from many ‘Rangers men` over the last few months with their empty promises of rescue packages and the like and as the Sun broke through the clouds again it dawned on me that we are the ‘Rangers men` who can save this great club, only we can provide the support and the finance to ensure Rangers survive the rigours of the lower leagues. We can do this by doing what we have always done; support our great club in its time of need!

I am off to renew my season ticket, here`s to a new chapter. To paraphrase Bilbo Baggins; time for another great adventure!
