Rangers will take part in the Ramsden Cup for the first time in their history. The first game is away to Brechin City in the first round next Sunday 29th July 2012. The game is live on BBC Alba.

The first round is split into two regions… North East and South West. Rangers you would expect to be in the South West region but as they replaced Dundee they are in the North East section. The cup features all 30 SFL clubs plus 2 highland league teams. The first round draw is as follows:

North-East

Brechin City v RANGERS
Falkirk v Stirling
Montrose v Inverurie Loco Works
Peterhead v East Fife
Elgin City v Arbroath
Forfar v Dunfermline
Wick v Raith Rovers
Cowdenbeath v Alloa


South-West

East Stirling v Ayr United
Greenock Morton v Albion Rovers
Berwick Rangers v Queen’s Park
Dumbarton v Queen Of The South
Hamilton v Airdrie United
Stranraer v Stenhousemuir
Annan v Livingston
Clyde v Partick Thistle

The Ramsden Cup aka Scottish League Challenge Cup has been going since 1990 and has been known as other names such as B&Q Cup, Bell’s Cup and Alba Cup. Falkirk are the most successful club having lifted the trophy four times. The final is usually played at a smaller venue such as McDermiad Park or Fir Park rather than Hampden, although if Rangers made it to the final it may go to Hampden.
