Elgin set to learn fate

SFL bosses are meeting tonight to discuss what punishment to hand to Elgin City after the club called off their game at the last minute. The minnows face real danger of a points deduction and/or a fine after police forced them to call the match with Rangers off after the sold too many tickets.

SFL rule 98.4 states: “Any club without just cause failing to fulfil its fixture obligations in respect of any such match under the jurisdiction of the League on the appointed date or dates shall for each offence be liable to the deduction of points in respect of a League Championship match, and/or to such other punishment as the Board may determine.

Rangers have stated they don’t want the club to be hit with a points deduction, and Elgin will claim that they did have just cause but the SFL would be well within their rights to punish them in this fashion. Hamilton Accies were hit with a 15 point deduction in 2000 after they called a game off when they only had seven players turn up for a game.

Elgin are already out of pocket after refunding ticket money to supporters, now they could face a further fine at least and as we said perhaps a point deduction. The minnows are currently in second place behind leaders Rangers in the league. There is also the possibility that Elgin City chairman Graham Tatters could be forced to stand down. You could say his career is in tatters (I’ll get my coat).

Should Elgin be deducted points for the fiasco? Or is a fine punishment enough? Vote in our poll ————->
