Despite a report stating Rangers had agreed a fee with PAOK for Antonio Colak, the latest from Greece has denied this, insisting that both sides are still apart on the fee for the striker.

That stance has been relayed by Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos, editor of Sportime newspaper and website.

This comes after Sky Sports earlier feature that an agreement of around £1.8 million had been reached.

Clearly, there is no consensus yet on the status of this proposed transfer but the end should be on the horizon with Rangers renewed interest and the relatively small difference in financial terms that is holding it up.

Should the go ahead come soon, Colak – and the PAOK squad – are conveniently based in the Netherlands at present, for their pre-season camp meaning that travel to or from Glasgow, if and when required should be relatively easy.

From all that we know over the last few days, Rangers want the player in a move that will kick-start the preparations for the new season. Other targets will be lined up but much will also depend on outgoing transfer activity, with the potential sums involved having an effect on the profile of new arrivals.

Whilst it is easy to be impatient despite a ticking clock, there are different variables in play in this current transfer window in what is a high stakes situation. Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson will be all to aware of the demands and the need for an injection of quality into the first team.

Now they have to deliver that, balancing their responsibilities with the reality of the present transfer market and Rangers’s overall financial position.
