The organisers of the Sydney Super Cup have hit back at Rangers following the club’s statement that it would not be participating in the tournament.

The blame and claim saga will no doubt rumble on for a while but the important thing from a Rangers perspective is that this decision stands – there will be time for analysis and accountability to follow.

The Australians have hit back at Rangers decision with a warning that they will consult before the possibility of taking action against the club, so we will see just how likely that is and if the contracts were as tight as speculated.

As seen above, the response included:

“In changing their minds, the Rangers board has let down many, many fans in Australia and the Asian region. We will now consult with our stakeholders before determining our response.”

Damage

This is bad news for the organisers who will now be seeking to arrange a replacement for Rangers, most likely an international team to boost appeal and sales. Whilst they might be tempted to go after Ibrox bosses, a new team going to Sydney will not want involved too much in this argument, if at all. It could just be that the matter runs out of steam eventually and then it can be promoted as a Celtic festival as much as they want.

Could Rangers even go to Australia to play separately, as a compromise? Wouldn’t that be interesting.
