With the league title wrapped up, speculation has already begun surrounding who Rangers will recruit for an assault on the Champions League and to defend their Scottish Premiership crown next season.

One name that has popped up recently has been Britt Asombalonga, the Middlesbrough striker who is out of contract at the end of the season and, speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League hit-man, Kevin Phillips believes that it is a move that could go either way:

“He’s blown hot and cold recently.

“It is a transfer that could pay off because on his day he’s dangerous but it could also not pay off because he has struggled for consistency.

“Britt, in spells, has done well but he has never had a season where he has done consistently well and that would be my concern.

“He has got great quality though so it could work out to be a good one. One to watch.”

The 28-year old has shown in flashes what he is capable of but, as Phillips alludes to, he has never been a consistent 20-30 goal a season striker throughout his career and a lot would depend on what was being asked of him as part of the Rangers attack.

Who won last season's POTY?

If Morelos leaves Steven Gerrard already has Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe who he knows he can rely on, it could be that Assombalonga is being targeted to replace “fourth choice” Jermain Defoe in which case it probably is a deal that has value – especially with no transfer fee involved.
