Scott Arfield has indicated that he is close to signing a new deal to stay with Rangers beyond the end of this season.

The 33-year old will provide an element of continuity and depth to the squad at Ibrox into the new season following a run of impressive form in recent months. In particular, he seems to have been galvanised by the arrival of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, as reflected in his performances and that is set to be rewarded.

The West Lothian man fielded questions at the press conference today, ahead of the Hearts game on Sunday. As well as a sober reflection on the painful Old Firm defeat on Wednesday, he opened up on the latest regarding his situation at the club:

“My agent is talking with the club at the minute. This is a club that I want to be a part of for a number of years and hopefully, we can get an agreement quite quickly.”

“I’ve never said anything different, how happy I am here and how grateful I am to be at this football club so hopefully, that can get sorted as soon as possible.”

Agreement

Arfield wants to stay and the coaching staff are keen to continue working with him, as alluded to recently by Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

He still has plenty to offer on the pitch as well as his overall impact in the dressing room and as a positive influence to his peers and younger players. That role will take on a new element as one of the elder statesmen at Ibrox with the likely departure this Summer of Steven Davis and Allan McGregor. There wont be any change in terms of what Arfield has been doing already but he will assume some more responsibility and stature.

With a willingness on both sides to do a deal, a fresh 12 month renewal is likely for Arfield very soon on what should be a straightforward arrangement.
