The tributes to Walter Smith keep on coming and the latest one is more than a touch personal.

Andy Goram was signed from Hibs by Smith in 1991 and the rest as they say, is history.

Sometimes, people forget that the Bury-born player was signed to take over from another excellent ‘keeper in England international Chris Woods.

Within a couple of years, Goram had firmly established himself and his class between the posts made him an integral part of what would be the ‘nine in a row’ squad, with the likes of Gough, McCoist, Ferguson and Durrant showing their longevity as well.

To those players and many that came along for a lesser period, Walter Smith was more than a manager, that is clear.

In what is still an emotional and testing time for those who were close to the great man, various individuals have been making their own mark of respect toward their leader and mentor.

‘The Goalie’ was no different and he left a particular touching tribute, in a way that only he could.

“Rest easy Gaffa, from Your Goalie”

Between 1991 and 1998, Goram played 184 times for the Gers, with that number lessened only because of injury.

His legendary status at the club was fastened with his inclusion in the ‘greatest ever team’, as voted by the fans several years ago, but he will always me remembered in the same breath as ‘nine in a row’ and the iconic manager, Mr Walter Smith.
