The frustrating thing about Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Motherwell was the number of times that Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo or other guilty parties got into good shooting positions only to refuse to pull the trigger.

What would you say if I told you that there is an England international, still in his 20s, loves shooting from long range and is available for free?

Andros Townsend has been at Crystal Palace since 2016 and must surely be sick of the annual relegation battle/mid-table obscurity that playing for such a team brings as he approaches the last few months of his contract.

He has just one goal and three assists in the Premier League this season but he is hardly playing for a team known for it’s attacking intent and freedom afforded to it’s flair players, at Rangers, Townsend would be allowed to occupy the right-hand side of the forward line and cut inside onto his favoured left foot.

Andros Townsend, what are you saying?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Similar to Ryan Kent, he is cable of using both feet which could see a greater rotation between the two wide forwards to keep opposition defenders honest and, playing under Roy Hodgson, he at least knows about the dirty side of the game, having to track back or press wouldn’t be a shock for him either.

Wages could be an obstacle but having been at Premier League clubs almost all his career, he may fancy one last crack at European football and the chance to win titles, he wouldn’t have a sell on value, but when you aren’t having to pay a transfer fee and are getting a known quantity, I’d certainly be asking the question.
