The Allan McGregor situation at Ibrox has taken an interesting turn tonight with the latest report suggesting that no talks or agreement are yet in place.

That is at odds with a conflicting update earlier on Tuesday which alluded to a deal in waiting with the suggestion that a coaching role was also being prepared for the veteran Rangers goalkeeper.

Joshua Barrie has penned the following this evening:

“Reports have suggested that the veteran goalkeeper has entered talks to prolong his stay at the club beyond this summer.”

“However, the Rangers Review understands that discussions have not yet taken place regarding a possible contract extension. The player and club enjoy an excellent relationship and although an extension is not off the table, no discussions are currently ongoing.”

That came after Chris Jack writing for the Glasgow Times briefed the opposite, but his article is no longer available at the time of writing:

Outcome

Let’s take a step back for a second and consider all options.

Firstly, McGregor to remain and also to coach. Would this be as number one or backup? Maybe even as a third choice which would also validate a home grown quota for Euro purposes. The latter has some merit but would be a bit of a fall from grace and status for a player such as McGregor. Given how the season developed, it is just unrealistic for him to go into another season as number one. That should not happen.

If the 40-year old is the main competition for Jon McLaughlin next season it keeps the door open for him, but it just doesn’t seem ‘right’.

Talks will take place very soon to some extent, that is for sure. Rangers will be updating the long serving player in regard to their thinking on the goalkeeping situation moving forward. The Hampden farewell appeared to be the final, fitting send-off but there could yet be a stay. Ultimately, it will depend what the club (Gio/Ross Wilson) want to do with the consensus, or not, of Allan McGregor.
