Former Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn is reported to now be valued at an incredible £10m, just 12 months after leaving the club for a fee reported to be around £250,000.

The Scottish Sun say that he is being chased by a number of English Championship clubs after a terrific season with Ipswich Town, but clubs like Sheffield United have now been priced out of a deal for the player, with the Tractor Boys valuing him at the enormous eight-figure fee.

It’s deeply frustrating for supporters considering the cut price fee he left Ibrox for.

There’s no doubt that the general feeling when Waghorn left was that the club could do better in the striker department, but let’s not forget that the player actually finished the 2016/17 season as the club’s top scorer, with 16 goals.

The fire sale that occurred when Pedro Caixinha took charge appears to have been incredibly short-sighted, as many predicted at the time.

To let an asset like Waghorn go so cheaply highlights the almost unforgivable mistakes that have occurred when it comes to player recruitment over the past few years. The striker scored 44 goals in 78 appearances for the Gers, it’s not like him becoming a regular scorer in the Championship was completely unforeseeable.

Mark Allen at least seems to have got a grip on recruitment in general, but even this summer we have seen the likes of David Bates leave for almost nothing.

The club really need to start valuing players more when they leave Glasgow, or more stories like this one are likely to surface.
