Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed he is still looking to sign a central defender in the closing stages of the transfer window, despite the excellent form of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.

The defensive duo have formed quite the partnership in the first nine games of the season, helping the side to keep five clean sheets during the unbeaten run.

Gerrard, acknowledging the impact both have made, is now seeking to add depth to the position, providing the transfer update ahead of Thursday night’s clash with FC Ufa.

As quoted by The Express, the Gers boss said:

I’m still looking but I’ve been very, very lucky in the centre-back area so far. Getting this fella [pointing to Goldson] over the line to come and play for us, Niko as well.

They’ve both been two rocks for me. Being so consistent from start to finish and they’ve certainly helped me in terms of looking for another centre-half because they’ve been so durable.

But I would like to get another body in that position, that will give me the luxury to change formation maybe or pull one of those two out to help them in terms of giving them a breather.

Adding another quality option in the position would greatly improve our chances of competing for silverware across multiple fronts this season. At this point you might worry if Goldson or Katic dropped out of the team.

A few defenders have left Ibrox this summer and with Ross McCrorie moving into midfield, we’re definitely looking a little light.

Hopefully Gerrard is a happy man on September 1st, welcoming his latest signing to the club.
