“Win-win” Ex-Rangers star backs contract offer to £10m man to fend off Premier League interest

|

A recent report in The Scottish Sun claims that Steven Gerrard is set to offer one of his key men a new contract in an effort to fend off Premier League interest.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Ger, Alan Hutton feels this can only be a good thing as Glen Kamara has ben a revelation since his bargain £50k move from Dundee last January.

So what has Hutton said?

When asked if offering Kamara a new deal was a good bit of business by Gerrard and Rangers, Hutton said:

“Yeah totally. It gets you out of this January madness, if he was to sign a new deal soon, it takes away all the speculation”.

“And he has done unbelievably well let’s be honest as coming from Dundee to become one of Steven Gerrard’s main midfielders…he’s been absolutely brilliant”.

“So as well, from a business point of view, you tie him down long term and then in the summer, if these teams come calling again, the fee has to go up as he’s maybe got the three/four-year deal there”.

“So it’ll be Rangers looking after themselves as well as the player, it’s a win-win for both”.

So is Hutton correct?

With Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Burnley, Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Leeds United all said to be interested (according to The Sun), the Ibrox side are looking to protect their asset and reward him for the form he has shown since he arrived at the club.

As an established Finland international, who will be one of his country’s key men at this summer’s European Championships, his value is only going to go in one direction, not only do Rangers have to show Kamara how important he is to the club, they now have to pay him accordingly. They can’t put a transfer fee of £10m plus on him and not pay him a salary that matches or a least indicates his worth.

Hutton is correct, the Gers have to tie Kamara down to a longer, improved deal, even if it is just to improve Rangers negotiating position if teams come calling for the former Arsenal academy graduate.

What is Glen Kamara worth to Rangers?

£5-10m

£10-15m

£20m plus

Gerrard couldn’t have foreseen just how big an impact Kamara was going to have when he first signed for the Light Blues, starring roles in Old Firm and Europa League wins have also made him an unsung hero amongst the Ibrox faithful, if a player with his own song can be unsung!
