To say Rangers benefitted from Andy Webster’s landmark court case is something of an exaggeration. We may have managed to sign him below his market value but it was only Dundee United who actually got any real playing time out of him.

That he was a player of the year nominee for his season out on loan makes his contribution to Rangers all the more frustrating.

There is a lesson to be learnt from the Webster ruling, as it became known, in that players under the age of 28 who have completed more than three years of their contracts can give notice to cancel their deals if they have just cause.

Why this is relevant is because there are still European players in Russia who are unable to play football and are spending time out on loan instead, however, you would expect them to want to secure a more stable long-term future for themselves as soon as possible.

One such player is Arnor Sigurdsson, a player identified by The Rangers Review and This is Ibrox’s resident analyst Patrick Caskie as someone who could add firepower and creativity to our forward line.

At 23-years old he fits our player trading model perfectly and with experience at club level in Italy, Russia and Sweden, the Iceland international offers flexibility by being able to play anywhere behind a striker.

Working on a budget, Ross Wilson has shown that he can be creative in the past – deals for Ianis Hagi, James Sands, Malik Tillman and Juninho Bacuna  spring to mind – and this is the sort of loophole he should be aware of and willing to exploit, as Patrick’s data shows, Sigurdsson would be worth the hassle.
