Martyn Waghorn didn’t find it easy to secure first team football at Rangers last season and that came before Pedro Caixinha brought in further attacking options.

Both Eduardo Herrera and Alfredo Morelos have come to Ibrox.

Waghorn was unused in the weekend draw with Marseille but is hopeful he’ll be given a chance against Watford in a behind-closed-doors friendly and then the trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

He told the Official Website competition for places is healthy and was needed at Rangers and feels he can impress Caixinha if the Light Blues boss gives him a chance ahead of, what Waghorn believes can be, a successful season.

‘It`s important for everyone, but we have brought in two strikers and brought in competition right throughout the squad. Not only for myself, but for other players maybe on the fringes, it`s chance for everyone to impress.’

Adding: ‘We have games coming up, and when you get your time, you are going to have to utilise it and try to do as best as you can to force your way into the squad. For me, it`s going to be a big season – I want to do as well as I can for this club and I have a lot to prove. I feel like it is going to be a successful season for the team and I want to be a part of that.’

Looking ahead to the Sheffield Wednesday meeting against a ‘very established Championship side’ he went on to say it’ll be another good test for Rangers.

Waghorn, experienced when it comes to playing at Hillsborough, knows what the atmosphere can be like at Wednesday but it’s the Light Blues following that impresses him most as he knows whatever happens the Gers’ faithful travel in numbers.

He said: It`s going to be hopefully a good atmosphere as we have a lot of fans going down to the game. Hillsborough is always a hostile place to go when it`s bouncing, so it`s going to be a good game. It`s incredible we are taking that support away, and no matter where we have played, they have always been there for us – no matter wind rain or snow, they have always been there for us so hopefully we can put on a show for them.’
