Villa are serious about Gerrard and here is the timescale for new manager appointment

|

Aston Villa are said to be serious in targeting Steven Gerrard for their vacant manager’s position and have placed him high on their shortlist.

They are keen to prize the Rangers boss away from Glasgow back over the border to England’s second city, however the BBC’s Chief football reporter has also stated that other names are under consideration at Villa Park.

Writing today, Phil McNulty has laid out how the Birmingham club want to act as well as taking full advantage of the current international break to get their man, meaning they aim to move very quickly:

“Villa’s hierarchy are impressed by Gerrard’s work in revitalising Rangers in what is his first managerial job.”

“Gerrard, however, is not the only name being considered and Villa are determined to conduct a proper recruitment process during the international break to identify their new manager, with the hope of having him in charge for their next game at home to Brighton on 20 November.”

Immediate

Other names of interest are said to be Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, Denmark’s Kasper Hjulmand, Ralph Hasenhuttl of Southampton as well as Graham Potter at Brighton.

It would be unlikely that Aston Villa would not go through other channels to sound out Gerrard and his camp, before approaching Rangers. If an announcement comes from Ibrox then it means the manager is open to the move and that’s when things start to get serious. In the unlikely event that Rangers agree permission to talk and Gerrard says no, then the world including the next candidate knows that they were at least second choice.

Such is the football world, despite the order that things should happen.

This saga will play itself out quickly, we won’t have long to wait. If nothing follows from Ibrox over the coming days, expect another firm rebuttal from Gerrard in his post-match press conference for the Hibs game next week.

It is always a possibility but knowing what we do at this stage, now is not the time for Steven Gerrard to walk away from Ibrox, nor is Aston Villa the club to win him over.
