Giovanni van Bronckhorst provided an indication of the qualities he believes that will be required in order for Rangers to secure Champions League qualification in Eindhoven next week.

After the first leg, everything is level with the decider to be played out in front of a vast majority PSV crowd.

That in itself will not phase the Rangers team, given the stadiums and destinations that they have experienced in recent times but the situation on the pitch will be a form of uncharted territory given that they now have to go and secure a victory away from home. Last season, qualifications were secured at Ibrox against Dortmund, Braga and RB Leipzig with only Red Star eliminated in their own back yard but that came after a healthy 3-0 win in Glasgow.

The Gers have 120 minutes and penalties if required, the method doesn’t matter if the outcome secures a spot in the group stage draw next Thursday in Istanbul.

GvB was asked what qualities would be required in order to get the job done next week, to which he responded:

“We need to start well and be confident on the ball. We need to create as many chances as possible. We need to be strong at set-pieces in attack.”

“We can have a performance next week that we can get through. I have confidence in my team. With the desire and passion we have, we will be there next week.”

It is a bit simplistic but Rangers simply need to be better in Eindhoven. That doesn’t mean that the first leg performance was bad, far from it but the players and manager will know that there is room for improvement, particularly in defence. If that can be done in addition to better set pieces at both ends, that will go a long way to ensuring a victory.

Chances will come for both teams to score (again) given the similar level and potential weaknesses in Rangers and PSV.

The Dutch side just edged a five goal thriller in Eindhoven against Monaco in the last round so don’t rule out the same scoreline happening again, hopefully with Rangers reaping the reward.
