There was a surprise revealed in the stands at Ibrox tonight with the Union Bears taking up a different position than their usual BF1 location.

The group occupied a more central spot across the stand in BF2 coming into view of the main TV angle behind the Broomloan End goal posts. A positive, vibrant, effect was very visible as a result of the move which provides a glimpse into what would be possible with a full safe-standing section at Ibrox.

That isn’t going to happen anytime soon but there is a clear demand and desire for it as this demographic has shown, as well as the wider Rangers support repeatedly, especially for the big games.

Different types of supporters should be able to watch their football and support the team in the way that works best for them. It is the ‘active’, vocal support that contributes so much to backing Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men as well as endless visuals for marketing purposes for the club yet there is no meaningful dialogue or exploration regarding the feasibility of a proper standing area.

It will be interesting to gauge the reaction from the club and the wider support to the switch for the League Cup game against Queen of the South, which Rangers won 3-1 to book their place in the quarter-final of the competition.

Not out of sight or mind, this increased vocal and visual display from the Union Bears and Broomloan Collective initiative will be another talking point on a night of seizing the initiative at Ibrox, on and off the pitch.
