Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has spoken on the short-term future of Scotland international Billy Gilmour amid the current situation that he finds himself in at Norwich City.

Despite the Canaries being firmly rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, there is no sign of Gilmour getting game time, as once again, he was made to sit out Sunday’s defeat to Leeds United.

As previously featured on VitalRangers, Ross Wilson and Steven Gerrard have to be in the queue to be asking the question with an obvious drawback of clubs in bigger leagues very likely to be at the front of the line.

Tuchel was diplomatic on the current state of play regarding Gilmour but he was forthright in terms of a decision to be made in January, as reported by The Athletic:

“We will take the decision in January. That’s when decisions have to be made, not now. I spoke with Daniel about it and I was happy to meet with Billy around the (Norwich) match.”

“For me right now it is not the moment to already give solutions for January or open the talks to bringing him back – it is the start of November, there are still two months to go.”

“There is a lot of time to prove he has enough quality and help Norwich to be a better team.”

Change

Norwich boss Farke has made it clear that he is under no particular pressure to play the Scot, however he wasn’t sent to Norfolk to sit on the bench.

They need their player to get game time and to be developing. Quite simply, if there is no change over the next couple of months then he will be recalled and a better option identified.

Would he play at Ibrox? He is certainly good enough.

Whether or not the European champions feel that the Scottish Premiership would be a worthy platform for the 20-year old is a different matter but regardless of that, Rangers must ask the question.

With prospective Europa League knockout ties as well as the league run-in to follow after the turn of the year, the games will come thick and fast and in the pressured, must win environment of Glasgow, it might just be to the advantage and further development of Billy Gilmour, having missed out on the Rangers first team initially due to his accelerated progress through the youth ranks at Auchenhowie.
