Significant pressure on Giovanni van Bronckhorst increased even further after the 2-1 loss at St Johnstone leading to his untenable position.

Gio has lost the supporters, the benefit of the doubt and does not have these players on his side either. Some are going through the motions, others blowing hot and cold but overall, the Dutch coach is failing to get the best from this group, especially when it really matters.

Set against this backdrop, Richard Foster in his role as a pundit for BBC Scotland’s Sportscene has somehow suggested that the “panic stations” are something of an overreaction. Yes, really.

In the aftermath of the latest disappointment for Rangers, he stated on the show regarding the extent of the pressure on GvB:

“I think because the European campaign, yes, you fall seven behind Celtic and that’s a lot, panic stations, but you only need to look to last season and what Celtic did and the way Ange Postecoglou dealt with it.”

“So the league is definitely not over but I think on the back of the really disappointing European results where the players looked sapped of energy, sapped of confidence, they’ve got no real direction in their play.”

“Van Bronckhorst is under a lot of pressure but it is not terminal at the moment.”

Contradiction

The defence is a classic case of blind faith.

As Foster pointed out, Rangers are bereft of direction, energy, inspiration and more yet somehow the answer lies in more time and a magic reset after the World Cup break.

That won’t do. It is just a matter of time and the longer that the situation is left to fester, the worse it will be. We are well past the beginning of the end for Gio van Bronckhorst at Rangers.
