Lining up with his Rangers teammates as the Champions League anthem was sounded out across Ibrox Stadium – it was for nights like Tuesday that Tom Lawrence made the move to Ibrox.

The former Derby captain played an important role for the team against PSV in an inverted right midfield role, combining with James Tavernier on the flank as much as possible.

Lawrence’s ability to play across the ‘front three’ will hinder him sometimes as much as it will help the team more. He has already made an impact but it will be interesting to see where in Gio van Bronckhorst’s system that he flourishes most. Both he and Malik Tillman should provide very good competition for the ’10’ role behind the striker.

That could be the optimum position for Lawrence but as he proved in the Champions League Playoff first leg, he is more than adept playing from wide.

He was pivotal in Rangers equaliser for 1-1, finished off with aplomb by Antonio Colak. In the build up, James Tavernier, the Welshman and Steven Davis all made it happen – it was superb.

Then the second goal was about his desire but ultimately thanks to a howler from PSV’s Walter Benitez.  Lawrence stepped up to fire the ball into the turf in front of the keeper and a speculative attempt became a second goal.

Unfortunately, Rangers could not hold on to claim the win but the tie is still alive and if the challenge is to overcome, key men like Lawrence, Tillman, Tavernier and more will need to provide more headline moments to make it happen.

Tom Lawrence has started in Scottish football comfortably and now has shown he is capable against top opposition in Europe. If he can continue with consistency, that will go a long way to securing a successful Rangers career.
