Rangers win over Dundee on Saturday was definitely a matter of substance over style, with another laboured performance continuing the recent trend.

Winning ugly is a admirable trait and a necessary quality for teams who are serious about silverware but it has to be the exception, rather than the norm.

Last season, the title success was built on defensive solidity as well as dominating the opposition – so far this term, that has not been replicated.

Rangers are yet to find form, yet still sit on top of the pile in the Scottish Premiership with 16 points from 7 games. Yes, we’ll take it!

At Dens Park, the two major action points were Rangers well-worked team goal and a penalty save from Jon McLaughlin, at the expense of one time Rangers loan player, Jason Cummings.

After the opener, the Gers didn’t really kick on or get on top of their hosts. This repeated aspect of recent games has been very frustrating for the fans and there must be an element of concern from Steven Gerrard’s perspective.

Just like against Livingston last week, a lacklustre first half showing from the Scottish champions was banished after the break, presumably following a rocket from the manager in the dressing room.

It shouldn’t have to be like this.

As the game entered the final stages in Dundee, it became a nervy affair.

The home side got a deserved penalty on 59 minutes but it was saved by McLaughlin, he would be called into action again, right into injury time.

Chances came and went for the Gers, but a clinical edge was posted missing.

Full-time, 0-1 and three points is all that mattered but the last tepid display is a worry.

Elsewhere in the Premiership, Celtic slipped up at home to Dundee United on Sunday afternoon meaning the gap between the Old Firm clubs is now six points.

As ever in the Glasgow goldfish bowl, the schaudenfruede was enjoyed.

HIbs and Hearts remain the nearest challengers to the top spot at present, tied on 15 points, one behind Gerrard’s Gers.

The visit of Jack Ross’ side to Ibrox next Sunday will be a great contest, with both sides out to set a marker of a different kind.
